Tax Free Shopping 2009

by Kitty on July 29, 2009

tax-free-saleA holiday designated for the Coupon Diva in all of us - The Tax Free Holiday! This is exactly what it sounds like, your purchases are free of sales tax.

Now before you get all excited, it's not every state. I think I counted around 19 states and I am not positive whether or not South Carolina will be having their Tax Free promotion this year. These sale dates vary by state and run anywhere from just one day to a month long event!

Tax Free shopping is a promotion that helps consumers save money on items for back to school.  Things like clothes, shoes, school supplies and even bigger ticket items such as computers are exempt during this sale. Each state has its own set of rules on how much and what is exempt so be sure to check your state's guidelines.

It's easy to get caught up in the moment, when you are out in the crowds, caught up in the excitement of it all.

Here are some tips to help you get organized:

  • Make a List - Write a list of exactly what you need and the sizes/requirements.
  • Set a Budget - Decide how much you are willing to spend - what makes sense.
  • Look at your Sale Ads - Some stores will offer "special promotions" or incentives for the Tax Free Holiday.
  • Know your State's Terms - Max dollar amounts and items included in this promotion vary by state. Take a look at your states rules.
  • Avoid Overspending - Research items you are thinking about getting so you know if they are a good deal.
