8 Ways To Save Money On Your Cell Phone Bill

Posted on by

Cell phones have become one of those daily necessities that we seem to not be able to live without. It is crazy to think that not too long ago we did not have these cute little handy, mobile devices that connect us with the world at any given moment. With this access of course comes a monthly bill that we all dread and those cell phone service companies can charge a pretty penny for such a fun convenience. Check through this list of options and see which one of them could help you lower your family’s cell phone bill right now!

1) Check Your Usage

The first thing you will want to do is look over your current cell phone bill. Make sure that you are actually using what you are paying for. Maybe you are not even coming close to the minutes, texting and data limits that you are being charged for.

2) Drop The Wifi

Nowadays there is free wifi at every restaurant, store or shopping mall. You can easily hop on their “Guest Wifi” and scroll through any coupons you need or “check in” via Social Media. This will save you a lot of money in the long run. Also if you have wifi in your home that your currently paying for, you can use this option as an internet source for your phone. This way you will not have to pay for internet twice.

3) Student Discount

Here is an easy way to save that we sometimes forget. Are you a student or is there someone on you cell phone plan that is? Ask your cell phone company if they offer a student discount. If so, all you will have to do is verify that they are a student with a copy of their transcripts or student ID.

4) Threaten to Switch with Competitor’s Prices

This is one of my favorite ways to save when using any service, from you cable and internet bill to your cell phone. Research your carriers competitors. Find a price or package that is better and threaten to switch to it if your Cell Phone Company cannot give you something comparable. Most times they will not want to loose you and will find a way to save you more in order to keep you as a customer. There are also deals out there where some companies will pay for you to get out of your current contract if you switch to them. This is great ammo to bring to the conversation when negotiating a better price.

5) Drop The Insurance

Each time you buy a new phone you can get insurance on it. The only thing is that there are so many loop holes that most times the insurance will not work for everything that can go wrong with the phone. This has happened to me first hand and I was out a phone and had to buy a new one full price even though nothing I had done to the phone had caused it to stop working. Now I no longer pay for the insurance because it is an added fee that did not do for me what I thought it would.

6) Skip Roadside Assistance

In some cases your cell phone plan can come with roadside assistance. If you already have a roadside benefit either through AAA or even your credit card, you can opt out of it on your cell phone plan. No sense in paying for the same service twice.

7) Ask About The Family Plan

Did you know that you do not need to be related or even live in the same household to take advantage of the “Family Plan” that some carriers are now offering!! That’s right, call your friends and neighbors and see who would like to save on their cell phone bill with you! You will be under the same “umbrella” of savings but each of you will get your own bill.

8) Try A Prepaid Phone

If you only need your cell phone for a few calls each week or just want to start limiting your cell phone use to save money, a prepaid cell phone would be a good option for you. In this case you would be basically paying as you go, and there is no contract! For most of these you can use your current phone to connect with their services. Check out the option that is best for you!
